A Tale of Two Weddings

"We should have eloped", my friend said to his bride and me as he prepared to enter the restaurant.

Of course he was joking.

Attended two weddings in three weeks - one in sunny Singapore, and another in sunny Perth.
Both were different affairs.

Evan, my primary and secondary school friend, and Mabel had an elaborate Toa Payoh Methodist Church ceremony followed by a grand 50-table Chinese dinner at Miramar.

In contrast, Joshua, my London cell and a dear brother of mine, and Michelle had an intimate church wedding with 120 guests followed by lunch at a Chinese restaurant with all of them in downtown Perth.

The first I saw from a distance, as Evan and I have hardly kept in touch since our ACPS and ACS(I) days, and there were so many guests for him to attend to.

The second was poignant and more personal - I was Joshua's best man.
It was probably the easiest best man stint I'll ever do, even though I had to fly 10 hours to Perth and back, rent a car, and rush there from a stressful 11-day work stint in Manila.

No bachelor party, no obstacles at the bride's house, no trying to get the groom drunk, no speech... it was dead easy.

Overall, weddings have this effect on me - it shows me a huge facet of life that is not seen in mine.

As one friend joked with Josh: "Now you're married, your next mission in life is to help your 'brothers' get hitched..."
