Newsroom Lessons

Memorable quotes about my profession, all told to me during the last two years.

There are many others, but somehow, these four stand out.

"The three-most important rules of journalism are accuracy, accuracy and accuracy."

"Good journalism is reporting what others try to cover up."

"It's like chasing a gal. If you like her, you take her into bed first, then talk later."
- On how to chase a news story.

"I pray, and the story ideas just pop up in my head."

The kelong Kelong

It was a fun-filled weekend fishing trip in Tanjong Pinang - except for one thing.

I caught no fish.

Wish I could blame it on the haze, the rod, or the oversized hook.
But I guess it just boils down to one thing - my lack of patience.

It didn't help that our neighbours - this family of 10-odd were catching fish left, right and centre.

Even their seven and nine year-old girl and boy were fishing them up like nobody's business.
It was as if the fish in the kelong could recognise their VIP rods, and chose to bite on their bait, while leaving mine to the parasite nibblers.

Now, I truly understand Luke 5:5.
That's when Peter the professional fisherman tells Jesus: "Master, we've worked hard all night, and haven't caught anything."

Thankfully, the good company, sumptuous spread, and cable tv more than made up for the lack of fish.
And there was that kick-ass, hour-long Javanese foot and shoulder massage, for the princely sum of S$9 before I boarded the ferry home.

It's All A Blur

Mystery 1: Why do people still smoke cigarettes outdoors when the PSI reading is 150?

Mystery 2: Why do people still barbecue when there's a haze?

Lost two years of my life at the Newton taxi stand on Friday night, when I was waiting for a cab home with my sister after cell group for 30 minutes.

Breathed in so much haze (doesn't help when you used to have asthma) until I had a headache.
Misery compounded by mumbling taxi drivers who are just looking for the slightest excuse not to pick you up.

It didn't help that people at the queue did not know how to form a proper queue.

This incident just heightened my desire to get a car, or move to a more central location.

Was thinking of pretty nasty things to do to the cab drivers who refused to take us. But when I thought of how difficult it was to earn a living as a cabby in Singapore, I decided against that.

Beer is bad

Stupidly hilarious... =)

WARNING:
Police are warning all men who frequent clubs, parties & local pubs to be alert and stay cautious when offered a drink from any woman.
Many females use a date rape drug on the market called "Beer".

The drug is found in liquid form and is available anywhere.
It comes in bottles, cans, or from taps and in large "kegs".
Beer is used by female sexual predators at parties and bars to persuade their male victims to go home and sleep with them.
A woman needs only to get a guy to consume a few units of Beer, and then simply ask him home for no strings attached sex.

Men are rendered helpless against this approach.
After several beers, men will often succumb to the desires to sleep with horrific looking women whom they would never normally be attracted to.

After drinking beer, men often awaken with only hazy memories of exactly what happened to them the night before, often with just a vague feeling that "something bad" occurred.

At other times, these unfortunate men are swindled out of their life's savings, in a familiar scam known as "a relationship."

In extreme cases, the female may even be shrewd enough to entrap the unsuspecting male into a longer term form of servitude and punishment referred to as "marriage."

Men are much more susceptible to this scam after beer is administered and sex is offered by the predatory females.

Please! Forward this warning to every male you know.

If you fall victim to this "Beer" scam and the women administering it,there are male support groups where you can discuss the details of your shocking encounter with similarly victimized men.

For the support group nearest you, just look up "Golf Courses" in the phone book.
